Collecting algae samples is simple and straight-forward. For phytoplankton (whole water) samples, simply fill the bottles that contain Lugol’s iodine preservative, taking care not to rinse out the preservative. For periphyton samples, scrape a known area of substrate and transfer to the bottles. Please provide us with the area sampled.
Once water samples are preserved in Lugol’s, they are stable at room temperature and have a holding time over one year.
We recommend a Chain of Custody form when you send samples to us (example below).
